Gorilla Coffee Alliance – Health, Ecosystems, and Agriculture for esilient, Thriving Societies (HEARTH)

DRC’ Khuzi-Biega National Park (KBNP) is one of the last habitats of the eastern lowland gorilla and the reservoir of incredible biodiversity. Overpopulation and the exploitation of natural resources as well as the 20 years Kivu conflict has resulted into forest lost and social and economic instability.

Additionally the renowned volcanic “terroir” of Kivu has potential for the production of sustainable high-quality and high-valuable coffees that can be considered as an engine of forest conservation, social stability and economic prosperity.

OFI is partnering with USAID, Technoserve, WCS and Asili, as part of the Gorilla Coffee Alliance in DRC to address current KBNP challenges by developing a professional and sustainable high-quality coffee value chain around the park through i) Promoting regenerative agriculture practices, ii) Strengthening KBNP governance, iii) Incentivizing conservation actions of local entities and iv) Support thriving communities.

TRANSFORMATION GOALS

A sustainable gorilla-friendly and high-quality coffee sector will reduce the motivation of local communities to engage in illegal activities and increase household resilience. Prosperous farmers, thriving Communities and Regenerating the living world transformation will be achieved through the following results:

Local populations see an interest in coffee farming and adopt regenerative practices that will lead to reforestation and better productivity.

Specialty coffee industry develops its interest in DRC by positioning Alliance’s coffees in the specialty coffee impacting origin’s reputation and local economy.

Governance mechanisms are strengthened leading to better relationships between communities and the park and to reducing illegal activities.

Green House Gas emissions are reduced: planting 8 million coffee seedlings and native trees will contribute to forest restoration and GHG sequestration in the long-term.

PATHWAY TO SCALE

A Sustainable and high-quality coffee sector around the KBNP will lead to biodiversity conservation and economic opportunities that builds local capacity in landscape transformation.

The park: new economic opportunities by strengthening local coffee sector and governance mechanisms while making the park known to coffee consumers will contribute to generate income for the park and enhance conservation capacity.

Coffee farmers: Regenerative agriculture practices and tailored services (Technical assistance, healthy planting material) will lead to improve farming systems and increase coffee productivity and quality so farmers can get better profitability and increase coffee attractiveness.

Local communities: New economic opportunities and improving access to basic goods and services (safe water, healthcare) will lead with social stability in the project area in the long-term.
